Some definitions of terms used at MMU Library and mentioned in this Blog
Campus: location of university buildings.
Catalogue: an index of all the books, e-books, print journals, e-journals, CDs, DVDs, theses and other items owned by MMU Library
Due date: the date when items borrowed from a library are due for return. Items returned after the due date will incur fines. Items that have been reserved by other users cannot be renewed and must be returned on or before the due date.
E-book: an electronic or online book accessed via a website. MMU staff and enrolled students can login to e-books purchased by MMU Library with their MMU network ID and password.
Fines: fees charged for the late return of library books or other loaned items. The level of fine will vary depending on the item borrowed.

Library sites: MMU Library has six site libraries (correct June 2011) one at MMU Cheshire in Crewe and five in Manchester: Didsbury, Aytoun, Elizabeth Gaskell, Hollings and Sir Kenneth Green Library (All Saints).
Loan periods: the length of time that an item may be borrowed. This may be one day reference, one day loan, 7 days, 28 days. The loan period will be indicated on the date label inside each item.
MMU ID card: ID card for MMU also used as your library card. Cards are obtained during enrolment.
MMU ID number:  8 digit number on your MMU ID card.
Moodle: name of the software powering MMU’s virtual Learning Environment (VLE)
MyMMU: name of an area of the MMU website that MMU students use to access reading lists, student email, Moodle and other online resources. Sometimes called the Student Portal.

Online: a term for items uploaded to the internet. They may be freely available websites or e-books, e-journals and reports stored on websites that MMU subscribes to.

Overdue: MMU staff and students may borrow items such as books, laptops and other items. Items may be borrowed for a set period of time depending on the item. If items are not returned on or before the specified due date they will become overdue. Fines will be charged for overdue items. Due dates of items may be checked on the Library Catalogue or via the MMU student portal MyMMU.

PIN: a 4 digit number needed for reserving books via the Library Catalogue and renewing books via the Library Catalogue or telephone renewals service.

Print: items published in a paper based format.

Reading List: the material students should read if they are studying a particular course.

Reference: item must not be taken out of the Library.

Renew: changing the date or time that an item must be returned to a Library.

Reserve This Item: the way MMU students can use the Library catalogue to join a queue for books or AV items that are already on loan or ask for items to be transferred between MMU Library sites.

Shelf mark: sometimes also referred to as a class mark. This is the number on the spine of each book e.g. 338.4791 JON. This number indicates where the book is kept on the library shelves. The number relates to the subject of the book. There may be many books on the same subject so three letters from the name of the author are included at the end of the number.
